3.8.0.283 Unable to contact update server

It me, the linux guy from like a year(?) ago?

ACT has been working great, until now with the new update it just spits out an error every time I open it up that it is unable to contact the update server anymore.

Also since the update, dragon's Armory for tracking loot doesn't seem to be tracking my loot uploads. The website tracked my personal contributions up until the update, the the contribution number stopped going up. So I have suspicions that the update was involved.

  • There was a rash of people on Discord in the last week that could not connect to the ACT website... but they could not access it using a browser either.  Clearly you can, so it's not that.

    It sounds more like a software firewall that is blocking ACT specifically rather than not being able to access specific sites because of DNS or connectivity.

    Could you look in ACT's error log for what the actual connection errors were?  Were you using mono for running ACT?

    I am running ACT through protontricks using GE 9-11, previously GE 9-7 (which also didn't work) and before that proton GE 8-9

    Which, I'll be frank, I haven't actually gone back to test if it's possibly just a regression, but I don't think so because I was already on 9-7 when it was working. It all fell apart after the update.

    I don't think I have true .net installed on any of my GE builds, just mono. But the only thing mono has never allowed me to do has been to compile the plugins in real time. Gotta steal them off a portable build using my roommate's windows machine because I am far too lazy to spool up a windows install just to make plugins.

    edit: I have a few things I want to try out (recompiling the plugins on the latest version of ACT, reinstalling the new ACT fresh on this prefix) but I'll wait until someone with more know-how says "Yeah go ahead, can't lose anything trying"

    Edit-edit: I could actually just test that all out by spinning up ACT portable on my EQ2 prefix with the old plugins, see if that changes anything and I can recompile new ones tomorrow when I get in from work as my roommate's asleep at this point.
  • I saw one other person mention this error message and at the time this came up on a search:

    More or less they didn't implement all of .NET 4.7 which ACT just moved to and it gets confused reading ACT's app.config file.  But what I don't understand is why it gets confused only when making web requests instead of on startup.

    I guess your choice is to remove this from ACT's .config file:
    	<System.Windows.Forms.ApplicationConfigurationSection>
    		<add key="EnableWindowsFormsHighDpiAutoResizing" value="true"/>
    	</System.Windows.Forms.ApplicationConfigurationSection>

    In Windows, it only matters if you're running a HiDPI screen scaling.
  • I'm not going to ask why that fixed it. But it did. I'm gonna go kill some things and see if that resolved armory tracker too.
  • The other Linux user who had this same message said they didn't think they were using mono...  but I'm uncertain since it seems to fit so well.

    Also, no other Linux users have complained about this issue.  Believe it or not, there are dozens of you =P
  • Most/all of those will be using a heavily modified prefix for 14 that is made to function flawlessly because at the end of the day, we're all just as lazy as anyone else. Anyone running a fully hand built prefix will not be asking for help, they'll be troubleshooting and fixing themselves because they want it exactly how they like it.

    I can't say I'm the only one using ACT to parse logs in EQ2 on linux, but it sure feels like it.
  • Anyways, I can confirm that solved both my problems.

    Thank you and have a good night!
